SCAR

Sequoyah Computer Animation and Robotics

What is SCAR?

Team 2119:
W.A.R. was the combined effort of Sequoyah and Creekview High Schools in Canton, Georgia. It was formed in the fall of 2006 when a new teacher to our district, Mr. James Dennis, suggested that we start a robotics club because he had participated in FIRST in West Virginia. He was excited to begin a new team in Cherokee County, Georgia. Our county is very rural with few opportunities to experience new technology and gain exposure to high-technology career opportunities. Mr. Dennis also recruited Mrs. Geddes, who teaches physics at Sequoyah, and Mrs. Panik volunteered to be the Creekview High School co-sponsor. For two years, Creekview and Sequoyah collaborated with each other, uniting the schools under a common goal –understanding and exhibiting the FIRST vision. They won the 2007 Rookie All Star Award, 2007 Highest Rookie Seed, Ranked 5th in Elimination Rounds in 2008, and made the 2008 Computer Animation Entry, 'Recycling Grey Water to Produce Hydroelectric Power.'
In 2008, the schools had a decision to make. It was now possible to split into two teams, one for each high school. While neither school wanted to loose the other, they both knew that it was an opportunity they couldn't pass up. Creekview is now Team 2956, G.E.A.R., and joins Team 2119 is friendly competition at the Peachtree Regional.
Without their Grizzly Alliance, Sequoyah took on SCAR, Sequoyah Computer Animation and Robotics. It was a drastic change from what there had been previously--building in a new lab, with new members, a new Teacher Sponsor--Mr. Brian Carnes--it felt like a fresh start. However, there was some strong continuity--Mrs. Geddes still sponsored the team, Mr. Geddes still mentored. Larry Freil, a graduated member of the team, came back to mentor. The old members stuck with it, and inspired their friends to join. It was new, yes, but it was business as usual.
This year, we have gained another teacher sponsor from the Northview TechoTitans--Mrs. Abbie Taylor.
As SCAR, Team 2119 has been both a Peachtree Regional and a GRITS semi-finalist. This year, they hope to do even better, learn more, more more friends, inspire others, and of course, build relationships that will last lifetimes.
